Write a Winning Synopsis
Synopses are hard to write. What do you include? Should there be spoilers? Is that too much detail? And what’s the point of summarising a book anyway?
However, synopses are vital for the success of any submission. Together, we will discuss the importance of synopses to the submissions process, and how agents use them to assess work. We will analyse some successful outlines, exploring what grabbed our attention and explaining how to avoid some of the common pitfalls. In exercises, you will examine the style of a good synopsis, learning how to entertain and interest an agent. And, finally, you will have an opportunity to put these insights into practice and work up the skeleton of your own synopsis.
By the end of this course, you will have covered:
—what industry professionals use synopses for.
—what to include in a synopsis.
—how to grab and sustain a reader’s attention in a synopsis.
—the successful ingredients of a good synopsis.
—how to avoid the most common mistakes.
—a by-the-numbers method for writing a foolproof synopsis.
