We were delighted to attend the British Book Awards, otherwise known as the Nibbies, on Monday 23rd May 2022. Held in Europe’s largest ballroom at Grosvenor House London and first launched in 1990, the British Book Awards celebrate the creativity and ingenuity of the best books of the year and the dexterity of the industry talents behind them.
This year’s awards were particularly special for us, as Kate Nash was shortlisted for Literary Agent of the Year. Proudly sponsored by Amazon Publishing, Diana Beaumont (Marjacq Scripts), Camilla Bolton (Darley Anderson Literary Agency), Ludo Cinelli (Eve White Literary Agency), Crystal Mahey-Morgan (OWN IT!), Becky Thomas (Lewinsohn Literary Agency) and Caroline Wood (Felicity Bryan Associates) were also nominated and the accolade was won by Becky Thomas at Lewinsohn Literary Agency.
Against the upheaval literary agents faced in 2021, including “stresses for their authors and disruption to publishing schedules”, The Bookseller lauded those shortlisted for their ability to deal “with all the challenges thrown at them, and these eight were notable in particular for their long-term support of authors that goes far beyond the next contract. As with many shortlists this year, none have been nominated before – an indication of the wealth of agenting talent.”
“Kate Nash had a personal-best year at her eponymous agency,” wrote The Bookseller in praise of Kate’s work. “She has launched mentoring programmes to nurture creative writing talent, brought film and TV agenting in-house and kept her authors connected and motivated during lockdowns. ‘She is a brilliant agent because she cares about the whole person, not just what will sell,’ said one of her authors.”
“Behind every award-nominated agent is an awesome team,” said Kate Nash. “There should be an award for Agency of the Year really.”
Simon & Schuster took home Publisher of the Year, while Book of the Year was awarded to Marcus Rashford and Carl Anka for their inspirational children’s debut You Are A Champion (Macmillan Children’s Books).
